eat pray love

Reading a new book, Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert. It's quickly becoming one of my favorite books ever. The basis of the book is the main character treating herself - rather, rescuing herself - on a venture of self-discovery after a rollercoaster of unfortunate events and emotions. She decides to find herself in the three I's... Italy (eat) India (pray) and Indonesia (Love, I'm guessing, I'm not that far yet!)

The author/narrator's perspective is very spiritual, but not in a traditional christian sense - and I'm loving it. She prays to God that's real to her, not a white-headed, white-skinned, bearded man sitting on a cloud. She references him in several different ways in the book, but my favorite so far is "l'amor che move il sole e l'altre stelle", which means "the love that moves the sun and the other stars". I love the italian interjections in the book (one of her dreams was to learn italian, what better way to do it than escape to italy?!).

Anyways, the book is jam-packed with great points of view, wisdom, and great quotes. It's a novel I'm reading with a highlighter in hand.

One of my favorites thus far was "God never slams a door in your face without opening a box of girl scout cookies (or however the old adage goes)..."

So, if you haven't read it, DO! It's fabulous. I'll probably blog about it again.
Happy Monday!

smart woman!

"People are often unreasonable and self-centered.
Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of ulterior motives.
Be kind anyway.
If you are honest, people may cheat you.
Be honest anyway.
If you find happiness, people may be jealous.
Be happy anyway.
The good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow.
Do good anyway.
Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough.
Give your best anyway.
For you see, in the end, it was never between you and the world anyway."

I'm praying for you, Tony Hayward.

Driving to work this morning, listening to the wolf wakeup show, bet you'd never guess the topic of conversation: That's right, BP. Oil spill this, boycott BP that. And I got to thinking.

Call me un-American, but has anyone thought to pray for the BP big-wigs? Sure, I'm all for cleaning up the mess, and fixing the mistake, but that's just it....a mistake. Maybe I'm naive about the whole scenario, but I find it incredibly improbable that Tony Hayward sat in his office thinking it would do BP well to bust an oil tank in the gulf.

I, as much as anyone, find it heartbreaking that a disaster [to the perfect planet God gave us] this widespread with effects that are estimated to last 10-15 years are created by man. I hate watching footage of baby birds being dug out of beach muck covered in oil, and I love the ocean - a clean, thriving, healthy ocean - but I just find it unfathomable that the execs of BP are malicious in their intent. In true American fashion, every man seems to have the solution, and everyone heirs the attitude that they're smarter than those handling the situation. I'm kinda tired of it...

Thus, I heard that little voice in my head this morning, spurring my thoughts deviate from the norm, and from how I've viewed the scenario all along. Not necessarily change my view on it, because it is terrible, and does need to be promptly fixed, but my mind was opened to the other side.

What would happen if we, myself and fellow Christians, prayed for BP? Prayer for wisdom for the powerful people in BP, and other corporations involved in this huge dilemma. Even more so, prayed for comfort and peace for Tony Hayward, and the rest of his associates. Have you stopped to think about the pressure that's been placed on this man? Imagine the turmoil in his mind 24/7. Imagine the pressure, and hatred, and stress that has been placed on his shoulders. I for one, don't think I could handle that stress. So call me crazy, but I think it's important to pray for peace in Mr. Hayward's mind, and wisdom, and comfort. Because after all, it was a mistake. Granted, a very costly one, but again, I don't feel his intent was malicious.

In John 8:7, Jesus says "If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her." He's referring to a woman found guilty of adultery, but to me the specific act is indifferent. What I'm saying, is that rather than throwing stones at BP, shouldn't we as Christians show love, when the rest of the country is persecuting? Don't get me wrong, it is a huge problem, and needs to be fixed. There should be repercussions - I'm not saying we should all just blindly say "oops, oh well, it's ok, he didn't mean to", but rather than acting all knowledgeable about the situation, put some trust in the Lord. Ask for His favor over all the minds working on the situation, and frankly, give the guy a break.

So for me, I'm choosing to pray for Tony Hayward. Because you know this man has [literally] the weight of the world on his shoulders. Because I believe a mind at peace, or a mind that has at least a shred of peace will conceive a far better solution than a mind in turmoil. I don't even know if He's a Christian, but I think he's gonna need God's grace and faithfulness to pull him out of this hole that's been dug for him.

Call me crazy [which I fully expect some might after reading this], but aren't Christians supposed to think differently than the world? I just have a heart full of compassion for this man this morning, and can't help but be burdened by the fact that everyone's hating and berating him, and no one's loving him, when our purpose in life is to love.

Enough soapbox, back to work.

Website is UP!

I've finally created a website for all my designs! I've got a long way to go, but I wanted to at least have something out there. I've been getting a lot of wedding orders for calligraphy, and people were asking for samples, and a lot of requests for personalized notecards...so a long overdue website is finally here :) Hopefully, soon I'll get a better domain name, but for now I'm just using my mac.com address.

It's a hodgepodge of stuff, because I create what I'm in the mood to create. One day, it might be designing notecards. One day, it might be painting a verse of scripture that's currently applicable to my life. Another day, it might be a cute invitation someone's asked me to make.

Check it out! You know you could always use some cute thank you notes! :)

The New Has Come!

I love springtime in Charleston. [Actually, when do I not love Charleston?] I've got the privilege to work next to a park on the water, in which I have gotten into the wonderful habit of bringing a blanket and a book, and spending lunch out there every day. It's an hour of sunshine, salt air, and the smell of the marsh in the breeze...every day. What a blessing! And again, God has given me - and you! - a beautiful, beautiful Friday. The rain last night washed the pollen away [for now, at least], the temperature is great, and everything is looking green and flower-y! I noticed new purple flowers in my yard just this morning.

How evident it is that Spring is a time to celebrate Newness of Life. Easter celebrates our New Life in Christ, and his New Life after death. I think God chose spring to display HIS new life after death. HE is the beauty in the flowers, HE is the beauty in the Sunshine, HE is the beauty in the marsh breezes, HE is the glorious beauty of a hideous cross.

This spring, I have been surrounded with His beauty in new things. My best friend from high school is celebrating a new life - she's pregnant! My new job has been going great - my first design piece just came back from the printer, and even it is beautiful [maybe I'm a little nerdy... but I think it is!] Some of my friends from college are getting married, about to begin a New Life with the one God has chosen for them. And lastly, our NEW church LIFEPARK is completely breaking the small box I realize I had put it in. Last week (the third official week) we had over 850 in attendance!! Talk about NEW life - Christ is showing His beauty in this church. And I'm completely blessed to be HIS servant in the worship band!

This weekend, celebrate the newness of life that springtime brings. Let your prayer be that of joyfulness, and thankfulness for new growth, new beauty, and abundant new life. Ask Him to reveal beauty to you--I promise He will!!

Peace & Blessings,
Court

Come On and we'll sing, like we were free...

(title: Mat Kearney "Nothing Left to Lose" lyrics)

By standards of the world, I should not be in a good mood, but I know it is the Lord in me telling me to be thankful for the beautiful morning he's given me! So for this, I am joyful! I stayed out way too late last night, spent too much money, and overslept by about 45 minutes this morning! (But still made it to work on time!)

Last night I went to see Mat Kearney and Ingrid Michaelson at Music Farm - one of the best shows I've been to in a long time! Mat came out into the audience and stopped right in the middle of me and all my friends...it was too cool! Then, Needtobreathe made a surprise appearance and performed with him...which was awesome, naturally. I love live music so much!

But then, it was getting late and I had work in the morning, so my friends departed for "wet willies" (YIKES!), and I decided to get a cab back to my car. I do believe the cab driver took advantage of my $20 bill, because he said he "didn't have change" for my $7 ride. Hmmm...how do you drive a cab all night, but not have change? I figured it wasn't worth the argument though, so handed him the $20, played dumb, and made his night.

The BEST part of the whole night though, was that I got to spend it with my best friend and roommate from college! Blair and I haven't caught up since graduation, so it was so SO good to see her, and hear what's going on in her life, and to catch her up on mine. I had forgotten how lucky I am to have a best friend in Blair.

Anyways, listen to Mat and Ingrid, and have a GREAT day!

Florida bound.

Off to Florida for David's 25th Birthday! Not the beaches though--

4 wheeling, Fishing, riding a "buggy", and wearing an orange hat because this all takes place on hunting land. I was told I need to find my "Inner Redneck" for this trip.... should be interesting! I am Tim Fraylick's daughter though....so it's gotta be in there somewhere ;)

I'll be SURE to post pictures of this adventure when I return!!
